What documents do I need to rent an apartment?

Applying for an apartment is much easier when your paperwork is ready before you start. Most apartment communities ask for the same documents, and having them organized can help speed up approval and prevent delays.

The documents most apartments require

Before submitting your application, have these ready:

• Government-issued photo ID
• Recent pay stubs or proof of income
• Employer information
• Previous rental history, if applicable
• Bank statements if requested
• Social Security Number (SSN) or ITIN
• Payment for the application fee

Some properties may also ask for a co-signer, proof of student enrollment, renters insurance, or pet records.

Proof of income matters

One of the biggest parts of the application is verifying your income. Many apartment communities prefer applicants who earn about three times the monthly rent, although every property has different requirements.
